Select a seeding system for your soil.. "When selecting for a higher SBU system, there are many factors to consider including single or double shoot, distinct split-rows or a wide band sowing, integrated opener design or wing attachment for an existing opener, and fertiliser placement relative to the seed zone," Dr Desbiolles said... "The best treatment, reaching over 90 percent emergence, in the Moorlands trial was obtained by adding a shallow operating scooping share ahead of a triple disc seeding system to clear away the top 3-4cm of soil into the inter-row zone and assist with placing seeds into moist soil," Dr Desbiolles said...

A major research focus of the GRDC National Water-use Efficiency Initiative during the first two years of the project has been on better capturing and storing rain falling during the summer fallow period and using it for winter crop production... Six of the projects within the initiative have experiments investigating the impact of weeds, stubble, grazing and/or cultivation on summer fallow efficiency (defined as the proportion of rain falling during the summer fallow period that is made available to a subsequent crop), and subsequent crop yield... In summary, the major effect of stubble on fallow efficiency is through improved infiltration rather than reduction of evaporative losses, and stubble is of greatest benefit where summer rainfall intensity is high and soil infiltration rates low, and on sloping country...

When left to grow, summer weeds tie up significant amounts of nitrogen... Grain yield was measured with a plot harvester and grain quality analysed (oil content and moisture)... Soil sampling in December 2010 showed that the differences in PAW measured in March between weedy and non-weedy treatments (Table 1) were still present at the clay site (Table 5), but no longer existed at the sand site due to the lower PAWC filling up during the growing season...
