Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

The Lower Eyre Peninsula survey showed most paddocks had internal blackleg infection levels below 10% unlikely to suffer a yield or oil content penalty... Current varieties have a number of resistance genes if blackleg overcomes one resistance gene, other resistance genes remain effective and so the crops should not become completely susceptible... Final grain yield after slashing was similar in all varieties (about 0.8 t/ha average), except CB1206 (0.2 t/ha)...

A NEW web-based guide on soil nutrients, Fertiliser after the Drought , can give cash-strapped farmers practical advice on how to cut drought recovery times... "To underestimate existing nitrogen levels can lead to growers sowing an inappropriate crop - a potentially critical mistake for farms recovering from drought.".. For example, calculations of nitrogen need to include residual nitrogen from fertiliser applied in 2002, subsoil and topsoil nitrogen mineralisation - which can be accelerated after a drought - and nitrogen removed in 2002 crops," Dr Angus says...

The field-based trials will create a micro-atmosphere around plots of crops by raising the level of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the air around the plants to 550 parts per million (ppm) - a level the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change expects the atmosphere will exceed this century... The level of CO 2 in the atmosphere is about 380ppm... Professor David McNeil, chair of agricultural science at the University of Tasmania, who established the project with the University of Melbourne's Professor Rob Norton, says it is vital for Australian farmers reliant on producing a premium product to know what to expect from their crops as CO 2 levels rise...

Over the three survey years this allowed 307 comparisons of Fusarium DNA levels assessed at sowing using PreDicta B with the actual incidence of infection that developed by harvest as determined from laboratory plating (Table 1)... The predicted risk of crown rot development at sowing using PreDicta B was within one category of the actual level of infection measured after harvest in 121 paddocks (39%, light grey shading)... In other regions a shallower sampling depth (0-10 cm or 0-15 cm) is recommended with PreDicta B. In 2013 we aimed to determine if this deeper sampling depth in the northern region, to account for RLN populations deeper in the soil profile, is potentially compromising the accuracy of PreDicta B to measure levels of other soil-borne pathogens including Fusarium ...

The results of experiments conducted in our PA research program suggest that variations in the soil often explain much of the variation in crop performance... Using Figure 4a as an example, spatial interpolation is used to estimate the yield that would have been achieved from treatment 2 in the strips that actually contained treatment 1, and vice_versa... Interpolation: A term describing a number of mathematical procedures which are used to create continuous map surfaces from values measured at points...

It has been estimated that each year about 200 melanomas and 34,000 non-melanoma skin cancers are caused by occupational exposures in Australia, with exposure to UV over a long period putting growers at a higher-than-average risk of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC)... "Farmers tend to be susceptible to non-melanoma skin cancers - SCCs and BCCs - but we know squamous and basal cell carcinomas are also risk factors for melanoma," he said... I encourage trainee doctors and registrars to do checks and discuss skin cancer opportunistically when farmers come in."..

With 'single knocks', 'double knocks' and residual herbicides, growers in the northern region are successfully fighting back against fleabane.. Fleabane is a wind-borne, surface-germinating weed that thrives in areas of low competition and which proliferated in the northern region as growers moved towards reduced and no-till farming... Fleabane proliferated in the northern region but has spread south and west as more growers adopt no-till and reduced-till farming...

Affected pods go grey inside in the early stages, then the whole pod rots (left); note the characteristic small black resting bodies on the stem (right) Collar rot or lasiodiplodia: bushes rapidly wilt and rot at ground level.. The disease seems to be worse where the soil is degraded through erosion or scalping during land levelling... Infection occurs at soil level where stems and crowns suffer from heat stress, soil abrasion or drought...
