Early lock-up enables a crop sufficient time to achieve biomass levels at flowering to fully recover grain yield but lower residual biomass at lock-up can reduce crop recovery during a sensitive window around or shortly after GS30 in cereals and bud visible in canola... We believe there is a 'sensitive' window when the crop may still be grazed but sufficient residual biomass is required to allow the crop to reach its critical biomass or leaf area to achieve potential grain yields... We firstly present some results form an experiment conducted at Greenethorpe, NSW in 2013 where a range of mechanical defoliation intensities (hard cut - 5 cm, moderate cut - 8 cm and 'clip' cutting - removing leaves) and lock-up timings were imposed to explore their impact on yield recovery in a winter and spring wheat and canola...

Biomass holds key for stock grazing timing.. Biomass assessments should be used with phenology rules of thumb in deciding when to remove stock from crops... "In most of south-eastern Australia, where wheat yield averages are around 3 to 4t/ha, there is often excess biomass, so by locking up the crop at an appropriate stage, growers can get the benefit of grazing without a yield penalty," he says...

Producers can increase net returns in dual-purpose crops by up to $500 a hectare and achieve other benefits including weed control through careful grazing management... While producers must obviously weigh up the economics of using dual-purpose crops for their forage or grain value, trial work funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and undertaken by CSIRO Agriculture has identified ways of optimising grain yield and grazing potential... "If producers are grazing beyond stem elongation, they should manage stock to protect developing reproductive structures and leave more residual biomass to avoid a yield penalty," Dr Sprague said...
