The yellow dwarf diseases of cereals have now been divided into two groups, barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) and cereal yellow dwarf virus (CYDV)... Where resistant varieties are not an option the management of aphid activity in crops especially early in the season to prevent its spread and or delayed sowing to avoid the main aphid flights in the autumn can reduce YDV infection... Later sowing to avoid the main aphid flights will reduce the incidence of YDV but this needs to be weighed up against possible yield reduction from delayed sowing...

Net blotches (Pyrenophora teres f. teres and P.t. f. maculata) remain the major diseases of barley in the northern region... While net form net blotch (P.t. f. teres) can be the more devastating disease, resistance to the disease is present in several of our leading varieties... Seed harvested from crops heavily infected with net form net blotch should not be retained for sowing...

Herbicide application around the time of cold weather can further exacerbate the development of yellowing and physiological spotting as it slows the rate that the cereal crop can metabolise the chemical... The chemical tends to concentrate in the leaf tips where it can become phytotoxic resulting in yellowing and spotting (Figure 1 and 2)... Figure 2: Yellowing of barley leaf tips following cold weather and frosts at Condobolin in 2014 and production of brown physiological spots...
