Catalogue: GRDC Final Reports
Grain growers in 300-400mm Australian dryland farming systems lack a profitable oilseed broadleaf crop with stable yields that can be rotated with cereals (and field pea/chickpea)... Research is needed to address the comparative poor harvest index of B. juncea against canola ( Brassica napus) ... Suitable production zones have been successfully modelled using a median yield of 1.5t/ha (APSIM simulations), but model simulations should be redone for a long term median yield of 1.2t/ha...

The development of varieties Oscar, Dunkeld and Rainbow - names older canola growers often mention when discussing their experiences with the crop - was a major turning point for the industry in 1992 and 1993, raising the bar for yield and blackleg resistance... Led by Neil Wratten from the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) and Dr Phil Salisbury from the Victorian DPI, the program supported by the GRDC left a legacy of disease-resistant, high-yielding varieties that laid the foundations for a strong canola industry and more robust crop rotations... Hybrid (F1) seed produced on the female plants is a cross between the female and the male plants in the paddock...

The crop has a number of advantages over canola and will deliver the same rotational benefits as canola... Some early research conducted in the Mallee of north-western Victoria suggested that nitrogen requirements were lower than for canola, but until further trial work indicates, fertiliser rates normally applied to canola should be used on B. juncea... The main control techniques include using seed treated with imidacloprid (e.g. Gaucho ), controlling perimeter broadleaf weeds, particularly summer growing brassica weeds, and sowing into standing cereal stubble...

Driftability of amine formulations The 2,4- D products Surpass and Amicide 625 which were used in the trial are considered to be nonvolatile any drift that is associated with these products will be droplet drift not vapour drift... Fungicides as foliar, seed or fertiliser treatments will play a role in the integrated management of this disease until new varieties with improved resistance become available...

The crop has a number of advantages over canola and will deliver the same rotational benefits as canola... Juncea canola will grow in most soils in south-western NSW but soils with a pH Caof 5.5-7.5 are preferred... Some early research conducted in the Mallee of north west Victoria suggested that nitrogen requirements were lower than for canola, but until further trial work indicates otherwise, fertiliser rates normally applied to canola should be used on juncea canola...

The project will evaluate the role and benefits of canola, juncea canola and mustard in the South West Queensland and North West New South Wales crop production areas (regional centres of Roma and Mungindi)... The project will investigate the performance of these brassicas in a range of scenarios to determine how they might fit into the farming system and will measure the rotational benefits of these crops in cereal and cereal/chickpea rotation systems... In the first year of the project, demonstration plantings of selected brassica varieties will take place on farms throughout the region to raise awareness of opportunities for these crops, and a detailed literature review and stakeholder workshop will be conducted to identify priorities for subsequent years field trials...
