When sowing within the optimum sowing window mid May - mid June; yield potential e 2.0 t/ha sow on narrow rows ( d 40cm) yield potential d 2.0 t/ha row spacing has less of an impact on yield.. Research conducted by Felton et al (1996) explored the effects of row spacing 25, 50, 75 and 100cm and plant density, 20-80 kg/ha, on grain yield in chickpea (see Fig. 1)... Time of sowing focus needed for faba beans.. Sowing within the April 20 to May 15 window in southern NSW, and preferably aiming for the first half of this window particularly in western areas, was shown to maximise yields in crops that produced six to nine tonnes per hectare dry matter (DM) with harvest indexes of 30 to 35 per cent... "To the contrary, sowing later than the sowing window can expose the slower-maturing crop to moisture and heat stress at the end of the season resulting in shorter plants, lower height of bottom pods, harvest difficulties, reduced biomass; and reduced number of flowering nodes, fewer pods and low yields."..

Sowing time is a major determinant of crop yield because, in partnership with the variety chosen, it determines the timing of key development stages and the environmental stresses at these key stages... Flowering time is a key factor in adapting a crop to an environment... Varieties differ in intrinsic earliness, a measure of how quickly they flower under optimum conditions...
