Some wheat varieties have the ability to store water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) that can be used as a reserve of assimilates for grain filling in the event of water deficit at the end of the growing season... The results may go some way to explaining why selection for yield in Eastern Australian breeding programs has not resulted in new varieties with increased WSC accumulation, as has been observed in the West Australian and CIMMYT breeding programs (van Herwaarden and Richards, 2002)... Previous work has shown that carbohydrate accumulation is moderately heritable (Ruuska et al., 2006)...

In summary, organic agriculture can provide yields similar to conventional agriculture using natural farm inputs in place of chemical fertilisers and sprays... The rots should be able to be minimised through good field practices, chemical control, gentle washing of carrots and keeping them cool and wet at all times...

Preliminary studies carried out as part of the project last season, sought to establish whether crop reflectance readings could be related to crop size and plant nitrogen uptake at the key timings for in-crop nitrogen application tillering to flag leaf emergence (GS22 - GS39)... Much of the work on wheat has been conducted in higher yielding irrigated scenarios following Sorghum so that soil nitrogen reserve is sufficiently depleted to ensure a response to nitrogen... Furthermore if a split nitrogen application during stem elongation (GS30 start of stem elongation followed by GS33 - 39 third node to flag leaf emergence) could be employed in the knowledge that it was not inferior to other N strategies, it would not only give a greater flexibility to respond to the season in terms of spring rainfall (for dryland growers), but would also allow the growth changes (e.g. NDVI "change map") to be recorded with crop sensors (on a spatial basis) following the application of the first dose...
