Callum keeps the wheels turning on seeding innovation.. Grower Callum Wesley, of Southern Cross, is developing and trialling a new seeding system for lower-rainfall areas - called the Wesley Wheel - that harvests moisture in inter-row furrows... At Southern Cross, Callum says it was a challenging season, where daily rain events in June, July and August did not exceed 5.4mm - reducing water-harvesting potential...

Project No.: DAW 672 Paper reviewed by: David Minkey and Abul Hashem Crop Updates is a partnership between the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia and the Grains Research & Development Corporation 20.. The negative impact of Raptor and Spinnaker on herbage production observed in the 4 advanced breeding lines (Crop Updates 2004) was not reflected as lower seed set... Overall, 2,4-D and Gramoxone were the most damaging to legume seed production; this reflected the impact of these treatments on herbage production (Crop Updates 2004)...

UNFS trial manager and upper-north grower Matt McCallum says trials in SA from 2004 to 2007 showed that wheat-on-wheat sown on the inter-row could increase yield by an average of six per cent compared with on-the-row... "Effective inter-row sowing can boost crop yields by reducing disease, improving plant establishment, creating more effective weed control and establishing a better microclimate for seedlings," he says... "The first year is about setting up your sowing equipment to achieve straight lines, so the inter-row sowing can come into play the following year," he says...

Types of machinery and how graingrowers use them can make a difference in controlling weeds in a zero-till farming system... A Gason seeder on 25cm tyne spacing achieved 95 percent or 60 percent inter-row soil cover, depending on sowing speed, and uneven soil distribution in the inter-row... A Daybreak disc seeder on 45 percent spacing achieved 50 percent or 30 percent inter-row soil cover and large gaps of up to 25cm in the middle of the inter-row with no soil cover...
