Rhizobia R hizobia are living micro-organisms (also called root-nodule bacteria) n odules on legume roots contain rhizobia, which fix nitrogen from the air Ea ch type of legume is nodulated by a specific type of rhizobia, which are identified as belonging to different "inoculant Groups" R hizobia in inoculants do not survive well in extremes of temperature (over 30 C and at freezing temperatures) or drying conditions that lead to desiccation Di fferent legume-rhizobia associations will tolerate different soil conditions... Generally rhizobia preferences are similar to those of the legume host - medic, pea, faba bean and chickpea rhizobia prefer neutral to alkaline soils (ph CaCl2 6.0 - 7.5) - lupin rhizobia tolerate acid soils (ph CaCl2 less than 6.0) 2 Photo: G. The Code of Practice means inoculant products are to be manufactured under an agreed set of protocols and testing standards, and those that do will carry a quality registered trademark logo... Experiments showed that if seedlings (e.g. serradella) are allowed to grow for 18 days before being inoculated with rhizobia, the time it took for nodulation to occur was significantly reduced from 12 to 6 days... At the culmination of this project, no further research was necessary as the inoculant manufacturers were satisfied with the modified time it took to release results when aged seedlings were used in the MPN estimates... One of the outcomes of this paper was to set guidelines and establish a management committee to guide the process of ALIRU's transition into its new role...

Field research compared new phosphate solubilising fungal products over a range of fertiliser rates in legumes, cereals, sorghum and oilseed crops, new formulations of rhizobium inoculants in grain legume crops and potential bio-control products to control soil borne disease in cereals... The field research trials have screened the best active microbes, assessed combinations of active microbes, formulations for application (liquid, powder, granule, peat), delivery systems (seed or in-furrow delivery) and application rates... Further field and laboratory research is being undertaken to progress these possible candidates of field use in Australia and around the world...
