Screening for phomopsis (Diaporthe toxica) resistance in albus lupins cowley.. The overall goal of the research is to improve management options for farmers and to assist in the breeding of phomopsis-resistant cultivars... %germination indicated by dashed line; n=300 for each category, LSD5%=6.331; %infected seed indicated by solid line; n=150 for each category, LSD5%=7.581 Screening techniques In 2007 a set of 45 breeding lines, landraces and varieties were subjected to a range of screening assays to determine varietal response and to assess the suitability of each screening procedure...

Heads of wheat showing FHB bleached kernals.. The fungi persist and produce spores on previous crop residues of wheat, barley and corn (Figure 5 and Figure 6) although other grass weeds and crops can also be a source of inoculum... Use of fungicides has proven a useful tool in reducing infections overseas where reductions in FHB severity of 50-60% can be achieved when the most effective fungicides are applied at early flowering for wheat and durum, and at early head emergence in barley...

The zero or very low tolerance levels at receival centres can make diseased grain only saleable as low value stock feed... Infection of seedlings is favoured by earlier sowing as the fungus prefers drier soils and temperatures of 15-21 C. The fungus grows systemically within the plant, usually without producing symptoms, and then it replaces the young grain with its own spores... Covered smut of barley can be effectively controlled by using fungicide seed treatments every year...
