failed crop

Catalogue: GRDC Factsheets
Canola crops that fail due to drought, frost, poor pod set or low grain set can be cut as silage or hay... Markets for canola hay can be unstable... Before cutting a failed canola crop for hay or silage, the withholding period (WHP) and approval for use on forage crops must be checked on the labels of all chemicals used on the crop...

Table 1 shows that when planting between October and the 1 st of January, there is an 80% chance of receiving at least 107-126 mm of in-crop rainfall this calculation does not consider the impact of rainfall timing on crop demand... I have used 100 mm as an average loss figure for a summer crop in this region... Figure 4 supports the back of the envelope calculation suggesting the 180mm of starting water is the minimum required to achieve a 3t yield 6 to 8 years in 10...

My aim is not to provide a recipe for planting summer crops in north-western NSW, but to provide some insight and tools to assist in the decision making process... Table 1 shows that when planting between October and the 1 st of January, there is an 80% chance of receiving at least 110-120mm of in-crop rainfall this calculation does not consider the impact of rainfall timing on crop demand... Figure 3 supports the back of the envelope calculation suggesting the 150mm of starting water is the minimum required to achieve a 3t yield 5 years in 10 while if you have 200mm of stored water the probabilities improve to 6-8 years in 10...

The recent spate of hot weather coincided with a critical development phase for many crops and growers are being warned that heat can have severe impacts on yield, even in crops that are not moisture stressed... Backed by the Federal and Queensland Governments and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), the research found the most severe impacts on yield occurred when high temperatures around flowering reduced the viability of sorghum pollen resulting in reduced seed set... Dr Jordan said the impact of the recent high temperatures on individual crops would vary depending on the growth stage of the crop, varietal sensitivity and the duration and severity of the high temperatures, and that on-going management decisions would need to be made on a case-by-case basis...
