Growers have been busy in recent weeks applying lime to paddocks as part of ongoing efforts to overcome soil acidity and maximise their farm's potential... There is no doubt that lime can improve yields on acidic soils and is a preventative treatment to maintain soil pH at acceptable levels... "In the trials we assessed whether investment in fertiliser needs to be cut to achieve a profit from lime incorporation and, overall, the answer was no...

"In the trials we assessed whether investment in fertiliser needs to be cut to achieve a profit from lime incorporation and, overall, the answer was no... Dr Scanlan said growers considering reducing fertiliser application and cultivating soils to incorporate lime needed to consider a few factors to assess if it would provide short and long-term economic benefits... "Finally, the cultivation implement needs to be able to mix to the depth where the soil pH constraint occurs to produce an immediate payback on lime and cultivation...

Growers Luke (left) and Greg Moroney have trialled incorporation of organic matter on their property at Brimpton Lake on the Eyre Peninsula, SA... "David Davenport and Primary Industries and Regions SA (PIRSA) have been doing trials on part of our property looking at methods of improving sandy soils and the results from organic matter incorporation were so good we decided to give it a go," Luke says... "The trials were using a high rate of 10t/ha of lucerne hay, which was giving great results but would be very expensive on a farm-scale, so we have tested a reduced rate of 5t/ha clover hay spaded to 300mm depth."..

John says this requires both surface limesand spreading at 2 to 2.5 tonnes per hectare using variable-rate technology, and more precise incorporation of lime to depth using spading and mouldboard ploughing... John says where lime has been incorporated to depth on better country, cereal and canola yields have improved by up to 1t/ha within one or two years... John says wind erosion is the biggest risk of spading and mouldboard ploughing and he tackles this by using these systems in late autumn when the soil profile is more likely to be damp...
