Crop rotation and liming history affect the availability of soil phosphorus.. The opposite occurred for treatments with a continuous wheat history; ryegrass biomass tended to be higher where lime was applied compared to no lime treatments at an equivalent wheat shoot biomass.. Our results indicate that grain yield response to the main treatments and P treatments was driven by growing conditions prior to anthesis...

Since the early 1960's, many thousands of fertiliser trials (soil test-crop response trials) with accompanied soil test values have been conducted for cereals, pulses and oilseeds across Australia using nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K) and sulphur (S)... Nationally almost all of the phosphorus trials have been conducted with a Colwell P soil test, while a relatively small proportion of these trials also have one or more additional soil test methods for phosphorus... The critical 90% RY calibration result indicated for this selection of 206 trials is statistically calculated as 20 mg/kg of Colwell P. The critical range, given in brackets as 18-22 mg/kg, provides advisors with the likely range of soil test values associated with nutrient responsiveness...

Three years of trialling by GOA has consistently failed to demonstrate a significant response to the addition of sulfur (S) in yield or oil%... Numerous trials by other organisations recently have also failed to demonstrate responses to sulfur in canola... In summary, 20 trials have now recently been undertaken across a number of seasons and locations in NSW. None of them have demonstrated S responses in yield or oil %. This does not exclude deficiency and yield penalties from occurring but does highlight that the frequency and the likelihood is not high...
