Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

New research has revealed that hybrid canola varieties are potentially a profitable break crop option for Western Australia's low rainfall zones and that growers in these areas can make savings by delaying decisions about nitrogen applications for these varieties in particular... DAFWA senior research officer Mark Seymour said the results, presented at this year's Regional Crop Update at Salmon Gums, indicated that hybrid RR lines could provide opportunities for growers in the region to use low rates of nitrogen at seeding and then add more nitrogen, as needed, to reach optimal yield... Mr Seymour said the trial highlighted the importance of assessing the nitrogen status of the crop and ensuring that canola was not over-fertilised in low rainfall areas, as the reduction of oil content levels with increased nitrogen could also lead to big discounts...

WA guidelines sought for hybrid canola.. DAFWA senior research officer Mark Seymour says overseas research shows hybrid canola, which is a first cross produced from two parents, has the advantage of early vigour, weed competition, nitrogen efficiency and yields. ".. Farmers are discouraged from retaining hybrid canola seed due to genetic variation in subsequent generations, and retaining seed is not permitted by seed companies for RR varieties," he says...

Average yield loss of canola grown from retained hybrid seed varied from site to site, but ranged from 7 to 17 per cent when compared to the commercial hybrid sowing seed... The research showed a reduction in blackleg resistance in the retained hybrid seed but variable grain yield responses... While grain yield of CB@" Tumby HT was not significantly affected by using retained seed or mixtures compared to the commercial sowing seed, the grain yield of the mixture was similar to that of the commercial hybrid for Pioneer 45Y82, with and without Jockey , and Hyola 50 with Jockey (Table 6)...

Hybrid canola lifts mallee yields.. Improved hybrid genetics are allowing growers in low-rainfall areas to better match nitrogen applications to yield potential in canola crops as the season unfolds... DAFWA Esperance senior research officer Mark Seymour says the results indicated hybrid RR lines could provide opportunities for growers in the region to use low rates of nitrogen at seeding, then monitor the season and add more nitrogen as needed to reach optimal yield...

Mallee Sustainable Farming's Michael Moodie says trials at Ouyen and Minnipa found using hybrid canola seed did not boost yields in the low rainfall zone.. Mallee Sustainable Farming agronomist Michael Moodie said while growers in the Mallee have found canola can bring benefits as a break crop, the trial was conducted to investigate risks associated with the crop... Trials were conducted at Ouyen and at Minnipa on the Eyre Peninsula, with treatments including time of sowing, variety and timing of nitrogen application...
