Weed-free summer fallows set up crops.. The benefits of capturing summer rainfall when it occurs and the long-term advantages of keeping the weed seedbank low are driving the need to use double-knock herbicide applications to manage weeds in the summer fallow... Kellerberrin grain growers Scott and Ann Dixon see a lot of value in controlling weeds and storing moisture during summer as the long-term trend is a decline in growing-season rainfall in their area...

Scott says a double knock of glyphosate followed by paraquat is highly effective at controlling summer weeds, while reducing selection for resistance to glyphosate...

Whilst there is ongoing work to evaluate potential new desiccation treatment options, none of these are to reach the stage of a label claim (or minor use permit) and there use remain 'off label' and illegal and as such have not been reported in this paper... The paper explores factors which influence the uptake and movement of glyphosate within the plant, its mode of action and steps that can be taken by producers to maximise its efficacy whilst staying within the current product label guidelines... Whilst additional treatments have been included in this trial work to evaluate currently unregistered products and rates, the results have not been presented in this paper...
