pathotypes

Catalogue: Ground Cover
The Cereal Rust column in the last issue of Ground Cover discussed the concept of pathotypes in cereal rust pathogens... Pathotypes (also referred to as races or strains) are variants within rust pathogens that differ in their abilities to overcome resistance genes in cereal cultivars... The pathotype was commonly referred to as the "WA pathotype"...

It can be reported that no new pathotypes of wheat stem rust, wheat leaf rust, barley leaf rust or oat stem rust have been detected to date... Cultivar responses are not expected to change... It was less common in northern NSW; the pathotype associated with LongReach LincolnA (64 E0 A-) has been recovered at low frequency, but does not appear to have had an adverse effect on LongReach LincolnA and BolacA during the season; and the 'Yr17-27' pathotype was first reported in October (Cereal Rust Report, Volume 8, Issue 7, available at http://sydney.edu.au/agriculture/plant_breeding_institute/cereal_rust/reports_forms.shtml )...

Wheat stripe rust was detected across the northern grains region of Western Australia in 2015 - and thankfully all stripe rust samples processed were the original 'WA pathotype' (134 E16 A+)... It is possible that the eastern pathotypes derived from the original WA pathotype of wheat stripe rust with virulence for Yr17 and Yr27 may have hitched a ride back across to WA at the same time as the leaf rust pathotype... Any pathotypes of wheat stripe rust in WA with virulence for Yr17 need to be detected as soon as possible to enable the majority of growers who rely on Yr17 for stripe rust protection to respond with fungicides in a timely manner...

Colin Wellings, University of Sydney, Plant Breeding Institute, Cobbitty (seconded from Industry & Investment NSW).. If the variety is known to be vulnerable, monitor regularly Keep abreast of district and regional stripe rust activity Be prepared to act in a timely manner.. Include sample information (location, variety if known, date) and collector's details; email address will be more convenient so that results can be reported in a timely manner...

The paper will review the nature and origins of these new pathotypes, and indicate the expected changes in variety response for the 2008 season... These three isolates look different on these wheats, and so we give each the name of 'pathotype', ie it is a 'type' of the pathogen... The first major pathotype change in the WA pathotype occurred in October 2006 when isolates collected from Coleambally (NSW) and Horsham (Victoria) showed the ability to cause disease on plants with the Yr17 resistance gene...
