Until such varieties are released, northern growers and advisers need to select varieties firstly on the basis of crown rot risk and then manage for stripe rust ... There is a risk of WSMV being spread through infected seed into new areas... We have not been able to determine an economic threshold for RGB in sorghum from these trials...

Wheat stripe rust was detected across the northern grains region of Western Australia in 2015 - and thankfully all stripe rust samples processed were the original 'WA pathotype' (134 E16 A+)... It is possible that the eastern pathotypes derived from the original WA pathotype of wheat stripe rust with virulence for Yr17 and Yr27 may have hitched a ride back across to WA at the same time as the leaf rust pathotype... Any pathotypes of wheat stripe rust in WA with virulence for Yr17 need to be detected as soon as possible to enable the majority of growers who rely on Yr17 for stripe rust protection to respond with fungicides in a timely manner...

The discovery of a new pathotype overcoming the resistance gene Yr17 has been widely reported since the first announcement, just before Christmas 2006... What we don't know: the expected response of Yr17 varieties - this can only be determined in field experiments in the 2007 season and data will be made available as it comes on line, hopefully in early to mid-spring; where, or if, the new pathotype will survive summer, and in what quantities; and whether the new pathotype will establish in the first season - or whether it will take several seasons to become frequent in the pathogen population...
