The key period for protecting wheat against Septoria tritici blotch is from the start of stem elongation to the booting phase as the ear starts to emerge... Grain growers should be concentrating their first fungicide spray for Septoria tritici blotch (STB) at GS31 rather than waiting for the flag leaf to emerge before trying to get on top of the disease... Mr Poole says mutations similar to those that have made STB less sensitive (more resistant) to triazole fungicides in Europe have now been detected in Australia through work conducted by Dr Andrew Milgate, from the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries...

Sowing a susceptible wheat variety on stubble of a previously infected susceptible variety (e.g. Gregory-on-Gregory) represents a much higher risk for developing high levels of yellow spot... The incidence and severity of yellow spot increases as moisture periods lengthen such that it takes repeated rain events to drive the disease from the lower to the upper canopy later in the season... Yellow spot is generally considered a significant disease in very wet seasons (e.g. 1998 and 2010) where yield losses of up to 30% have been recorded in susceptible wheat varieties...
