Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

Some wheat varieties have the ability to store water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) that can be used as a reserve of assimilates for grain filling in the event of water deficit at the end of the growing season... The results may go some way to explaining why selection for yield in Eastern Australian breeding programs has not resulted in new varieties with increased WSC accumulation, as has been observed in the West Australian and CIMMYT breeding programs (van Herwaarden and Richards, 2002)... Previous work has shown that carbohydrate accumulation is moderately heritable (Ruuska et al., 2006)...

Please note that the research described in this paper has been carried out in New Zealand and that the use of agrochemicals in this applied research does not constitute a recommendation... Yield trends in wheat in New Zealand reveal large increases in productivity over the last twenty years... The Sirius wheat model developed by Plant & Food Research illustrates that there may be potential to capture more yield by moving sowing dates even further forward in New Zealand, although the model has not been validated for sowing earlier than April...

Irrigated wheat with dramatically reduced lodging potential could soon become a reality for growers with new germplasm likely to be delivered to seed breeding companies within three years from the Better Irrigated Wheat Germplasm research project funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)... CSIRO Research Director and Better Irrigated Wheat Germplasm project leader Dr Lynne McIntyre said the current research aimed to identify lodging resistant lines and transfer the lodging resistance into regionally-adapted elite germplasm... "Basically the project aims to deliver to Australian breeding companies traits and regionally-adapted germplasm with stable high harvestable yields of above 7t/ha and reduced lodging where less than 80% of the crop is at a greater than 70 degree angle from the horizontal," she said...

Relationship between growth stage and accumulated uptake of nitrogen by a wheat crop, expressed as a percentage of the total uptake... Optimising N supply is difficult in western regions given the highly variable seasons. Excessive application of N may increase water use early in the growing season leading to greater water stress during flowering and grain fill, resulting in poor grain set or shrivelled grain... There was no significant effect of N rate on grain yield but the effect on protein was significant with protein increasing with rates of applied N. As for the sowing time trial, there was a negative correlation between grain yield and grain protein concentration, and Gregory did not differ from other varieties...
