Trials show cost of varieties mismatched with sowing time.. The GRDC Variety Specific Agronomy Project at Narrabri in northern NSW has shown that slower-maturing wheat and barley varieties sown in their appropriate early sowing window tend to yield best.. The results emphasise the importance of sowing the correct variety in the earlier part of the optimum sowing window...

HRZ growers urged to be prepared for STB threat.. Mr Poole says rusts are a "puppy" compared to STB because fungicides do not achieve the same level of control as seen with stripe rust in Australia, and because the disease has a longer latent period which makes it more difficult to determine its progress... With the STB pathogen becoming resistant to strobilurins and triazoles in other parts of world and with evidence that the pathogen in southern Australia has some of the early stage resistance mutations to triazoles, Mr Poole is urging growers to use an IDM strategy and not base control on fungicides alone...

"In looking at fungicide options, bear in mind the recent discovery by Dr Andrew Milgate at New South Wales Department of Primary Industries of strains of the disease that show mutations conferring reduced sensitivity (low level resistance) to a number of triazole fungicides," Mr Poole said...

Time of sowing focus needed for faba beans.. Sowing within the April 20 to May 15 window in southern NSW, and preferably aiming for the first half of this window particularly in western areas, was shown to maximise yields in crops that produced six to nine tonnes per hectare dry matter (DM) with harvest indexes of 30 to 35 per cent... "To the contrary, sowing later than the sowing window can expose the slower-maturing crop to moisture and heat stress at the end of the season resulting in shorter plants, lower height of bottom pods, harvest difficulties, reduced biomass; and reduced number of flowering nodes, fewer pods and low yields."..

Schooner and Gairdner have been the preferred malting barley varieties in central NSW, with smaller areas of Baudin and some Fitzroy in the north... At both 77 and 101 mm, Fleet showed the least reduction in emergence, followed by Buloke , Commander and Schooner... Overall, the results emphasise the need to sow varieties that have short coleoptiles at shallow depths and to take care with seed grading and the use of seed dressings...
