Influence of fungicide rate (mean of fungicide products - four site mean) Stem rust control assessed over the four trial sites revealed that using high rates was essential for the control of the disease, even if the fungicide had been applied prophylactically (before infection was visible in the crop)... Influence of cultivar resistance and fungicide application (Prosaro ) on yield and stem rust severity measured on the flag sheath 18 days after fungicide application at early dough (GS82) and assessed at mid dough - physiological maturity (GS85-90) - Bairnsdale, Gippsland, Victoria, 2010... The yield potential for the crop with no nitrogen applied is estimated at GS30 from the results of numerous of trials conducted in that region where NDVI at GS30 is divided by the number of growing degree days (GDD) greater than 0 C since planting, referred to as the INSEY units (in season estimate of yield)...

After 12 years of continuous glyphosate application, herbicide resistance testing carried out on four populations of annual ryegrass showed confirmed resistance to glyphosate... Plant survival of annual ryegrass collected in 2011 from plots selected with annual application of glyphosate at 270 g ai/ha or 1080 g ai/ha at 3-leaf stage of ryegrass plants, following application of different rates of glyphosate (e.g., Roundup PowerMAX ) under glasshouse conditions at Northam in 2012... The overall survival of annual ryegrass when treated with a dose greater than 540 g ai/ha was higher in plants collected from plots selected with 270 g ai/ha glyphosate at 3-leaf stage than plots selected with 1080 g ai/ha...

At a Merredin Research Station field day, DAFWA researchers Dr Abul Hashem (left) and Mohammad Amjad explain the effects of lime on reducing annual ryegrass in a wheat/lupin/barley/barley rotation, four years after application of limesand... Western Australian research is showing that lime application not only helps to overcome soil constraints, but can also diminish weed burdens in low pH wheatbelt soils... The trials found the use of lime to achieve (even small) increases in pH significantly reduced the density of annual ryegrass, barley grass and wild radish in that timeframe...

Two pot experiments were conducted in a greenhouse during the 2008/09 and 2009/10 summers to test the efficacy of the double knock tactic (glyphosate followed by paraquat) and to assess the level of control with glyphosate and paraquat alone... Results have shown that the double knock tactic is the only tactic that consistently provided effective control across environments...

Controlled release urea - there is considerable interest in North America with the new controlled release urea (CRU) released by Agrium into the broad acre crop market... The product has a long history, starting originally in the golf course, turf and vegetable market, where long-term N release has great economic value... Further refinement of the coating thickness for field crops has provided products which release their N after 30-60 days post-application...

Optimising barley yields and quality in No-Till farming systems.. X Highest yields generally occur with row spacing narrower than 300 mm and the benefits of adopting wider row spacing need to be evaluated against the costs (in terms of lower yields)... At one site, there was a strong correlation between the variety ranking in terms of trifluralin effects on plant establishment and the ranking of varieties in terms of the effect of wide row spacing on plant establishment, suggesting the observed "tolerances" are more related to (unidentified) seed quality issues rather than genetic differences between the varieties...
