Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

KEYMESSAGES Incorrect use of phosphine since the 1950s, has led to escalating resistance in stored grain insects which threatens the continued use of phosphine at the farm level... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil... When running a trial it is important to: 1...

To develop durum wheat and malting barley varieties that make the most of these conditions, AMPS Research has been collaborating with Australian and international researchers to breed high-rainfall varieties specific to their circumstances... Ms Dixon says AMPS Research wanted to narrow down cereal-breeding research, which often focuses on cultivars that suit a range of areas, to cultivars particularly suited to the Liverpool Plains... Denis McGrath, GrainSearch's program leader, says GrainSearch was looking to expand into other high-rainfall zones when it was approached by AMPS Research, which expressed interest in evaluating certain cereal lines. An emerging sunflower crop affected by slugs.. We also had issues with preventing the airflow in the seeder blowing the lighter baits off target and stubble impeding the bait placement making it harder for slugs to find the baits.".. Mr Pilkington believes the application at sowing made a huge difference to bait placement accuracy and the residue managers on the precision planter helped with putting baits onto clear ground for the slugs to find...

Watch a video with FAR Australia's Nick Poole... Rust has taken a back seat as the primary disease for wheat in the high rainfall zone (HRZ) of south-eastern Australia with Septoria Tritici Blotch (STB) taking the reins as the biggest headache for growers over the last three seasons... "It has a much longer latent period (time between fungal spores infecting the crop and symptoms appearing), meaning you can't tell whether new tissue is infected since it takes longer for the disease to reveal itself in the crop," Mr Poole said. Leader of the Southern Pulse Agronomy project Dr Jason Brand says growers need to get the fundamentals for their faba beans right up front, such as row spacing, plant density and pest and disease management, to avoid any issues in the canopy later in the season... Growers wanting to avoid issues with canopy management in faba bean crops later this season should first get fundamental measures such as row spacing, plant density, inoculation and pest and disease management right earlier in the season... Dr Brand has been looking at novel ways of reducing the problem in the HRZ, including chemical and mechanical treatments, but says the key message for growers was still to focus on getting the important things right early in the growing season...

` The aim is to do this across all rainfall zones (high, medium and low), using both major cereal grains grown in WA (wheat and barley). The accepted definition of canopy management is 'managing the green surface area of the crop canopy in order to optimise profitability'... To date in WA, there has been some canopy management work undertaken in the high rainfall zones, but there has been no research done in the medium to low rainfall zones... ConsultAg wish to undertake a 3 year research project to validate, and if worthy, integrate the principles of canopy management into the Western Australian cropping system...

Yield can be increased by keeping the crop canopy greener for longer with the use of fungicides, according to research by the Foundation for Arable Research Australia (FAR)... Fungicides as canopy management tools can help extend leaf area duration (LAD) - a measure of green leaf retention over time... "If you think back to the idea of maintaining green leaf, you can actually use APSIM to generate some expected yields, and these yields correlate to an absolute level of LAD. You can then use APSIM to calculate the effect of losing 5 percent to 60 percent of that LAD after flowering (Table 1)...
