Mention of a trade name or company in this publication does not imply endorsement of any product or company by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia... Overall, 60-70 per cent of flour is used in traditional flat breads, 20-25 per cent of flour is used in western style breads and 5-10 per cent is used in cakes and biscuits... In summary, canola varieties sown 2-3 weeks earlier than normal (early to mid April) can be grazed in winter prior to bud elongation (usually providing 600-800 dse grazing days/ha) and recover with no impact on yield or oil...

The aim of the research was to identify herbicide sensitivities of a new lupin variety Gunyidi with the view to reducing its yield losses due to herbicide damage... The average rainfall from May to October at Eradu over the last 8 years (2004-2011) was 289 mm... The Department of Agriculture and Food WA, does not endorse the use of herbicides above the registered rate or off-label use of herbicides or off-label tank mixes...

Table 1: Effect of group B herbicides at recommended and greater than recommended rates on grain yield, plant density, dry matter at maturity and visual plant damage of two lentil varieties at two sites in SA, 2011... PBA HeraldXT (tested as CIPAL0702) has improved tolerance to the herbicide flumetsulam (e.g. Broadstrike , Multitude ), plus reduced sensitivity to some sulfonylurea and imidazolinone herbicide residues... Preliminary results have shown there was no effect of crop top timing on the incidence of mould in lentil in chickpeas high levels of mould were detected in the early crop topping treatment compared to all other treatments regardless of variety used (Table 2)...

Pulse industry authorities, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), say crop-topping too early can affect pulse grain quality and potentially result in higher visible mould on grain... Pulse Australia's Wayne Hawthorne says research by the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) indicates that timing of crop-topping may be important in reducing the risk of mould in pulses... The crop has a number of advantages over canola and will deliver the same rotational benefits as canola... Some early research conducted in the Mallee of north-western Victoria suggested that nitrogen requirements were lower than for canola, but until further trial work indicates, fertiliser rates normally applied to canola should be used on B. juncea... The main control techniques include using seed treated with imidacloprid (e.g. Gaucho ), controlling perimeter broadleaf weeds, particularly summer growing brassica weeds, and sowing into standing cereal stubble...

New wheat changes weed management options.. James Clark, Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) northern panel chair said Elmore CL Plus , a new Clearfield wheat released by Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) gives growers another tool to combat problem weeds... "There is a discount in moving from a prime hard to hard variety but it may be worth it for the opportunity to reset the system, control weeds and use residual chemicals in the fallow, a practice that would normally lock growers out of wheat that year," he said...

Multiple herbicide resistance in weeds poses a bigger problem than glyphosate resistance in Australian and global cropping systems, and the only way forward is diversity in weed control practices... "There are more than 60 countries where scientists are reporting herbicide resistant weeds and lately we have seen a big problem with weeds resistant to many different types of herbicides," he said... Dr Heap said the problem of multiple herbicide resistance in weeds was compounded by a lack of discovery of new herbicides with alternative modes, or sites of action (MOA) in recent years...

Suitable and safe herbicides are limited in pulses, especially for the post emergent control of broadleaf weeds, with many registered herbicides only having a narrow safety margin... The project will use ethyl methane sulfonate (EMS) mutagenesis techniques, as used in pasture legumes, lentils and lupins previously in Australia, on PBA Flash lentil and Nura faba bean to develop lines with tolerance to at least one new novel herbicide, in each crop, offering increased weed control options... The spray chamber method while effective for PE is slow, expensive and is not ideally suited to post sowing pre-emergent treatments other methods are being explored to meet the criteria...
