The project has supported the development of farming systems that incorporate forage (lab lab) and ley (butterfly pea) legumes into grain farming systems... Growing canola is like having a fallow period as far as VAM populations in the soil are concerned... Research in the area of AWM is looking at tactics that can be implemented during the summer...

Many catchment management plans have been prepared... Land use change to reduce leakage This research shows that drainage from cropping systems can be greatly reduced by replacing long fallow or continuous wheat systems with wheat/sorghum opportunity cropping or continuous sorghum... It has been found that black pointed wheat grain actually germinates faster than normal grain and is predisposed to sprouting should further rainfall occur...

Given the scenario, it is little wonder that in anticipation of a 1-2t/ha crop of cooking/sprouting beans valued at $600-$700/t requiring maybe one insect spray, that some producers were disappointed with what the mungbeans actually returned (processing grade worth about $315 net-to-grower)... Grains Research Update, Moura 16 thMarch 2000 (SOME OF) THE ECONOMICS OF NITROGEN, WATER, TILLAGE AND COMPACTION IN DAWSON/CALLIDE FARMING SYSTEMS Fred Chudleigh and Howard Cox, QDPI Key points Deep, high fertility soils Water, rather than nitrogen is the limiting factor to yield... Example outputs - returns from the same soil with different farming intensities 30-year periods commencing year shown Note: 'Opportunity cropping' modeled sorghum and wheat sowing based on the availability of stored soil water (SSW), and rainfall of 25mm over 4 days. Low-rainfall cropping needs an appetite for innovation.. Bearded man standing in field 2012 Farmer of the Year Peter Kuhlmann from Mudamuckla, South Australia, employs every strategy at his disposal to conserve moisture and drive improvements in water use efficiency (WUE)... Inter-row sowing, stubble retention, no-till, summer weed control, dry sowing, variable rate seeding and prescription farm mapping are just some of the methods he used to achieve a WUE of 71 per cent in 2012, a year when total rainfall was just 169 millimetres...
