A new testing service is being offered to grain growers and advisers to determine the presence of insecticide resistance in green peach aphid (GPA) populations... The service is being made available through cesar with the support of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) to assist growers in choosing the most effective product for controlling GPA... Anthony van Rooyen, of cesar, says resistance in GPA has escalated as a result of heavy reliance on insecticides...

Recent GRDC-funded research has uncovered widespread resistance among green peach aphid populations to pirimicarb, synthetic pyrethroids and organophosphates in Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia... Department of Agriculture and Food, WA (DAFWA), PestFax coordinator Peter Mangano says grain growers have experienced significant issues with resistance in green peach aphid this season... Dr Umina says: "If we discover that individual aphids have resistance to organophosphates, synthetic pyrethroids and carbamates, it will mean the likely reproduction of fully resistant offspring, as green peach aphids can reproduce asexually to produce clones of themselves...

The arrival of the previously undetected Russian Wheat Aphid (RWA) in the southern cropping region has heightened the need for correct identification of aphid species present in this year's crops... The publication now includes information on RWA which was detected in Australia for the first time in May this year and is now established in a number of cropping regions in South Australia and Victoria... Identification of crop aphids is very important when making control decisions and the Back Pocket Guide is designed to assist growers and agronomists in their efforts to correctly identify species observed in crops, this year and beyond...

Act early to reduce canola virus risk this coming season.. Entomologist Paul Umina of cesar says widespread infestations of green peach aphid (GPA) contributed to the 2014 outbreak of BWYV, which is transferred into canola crops by aphids carrying the virus... SARDI plant pathologist Jenny Davidson said this funding was and will be used in a number of areas, including forensic analysis of canola paddocks; communication to growers and advisers (assisted in SA with an additional $40,000 in emergency funding provided by SAGIT); and preliminary assessment of virus levels in different canola varieties to identify if there are any useful levels of resistance to BWYV for future sowing recommendations...

Do not sow canola into desiccating weeds/canola volunteers; otherwise, aphids will move directly from the weeds to the emerging seedlings... Use seed treated with a neonicotinoid insecticide and ensure proper application and coverage of seed dressing for efficacy against GPA... In order to control GPA populations colonising older canola leaves, applications should be made before crop closure and by using appropriate spray technologies...

Crop insect pest and disease experts, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), advise that strategies put in place now will help to discourage aphid population build-up and the potential for crop diseases, especially beet western yellows virus (BWYV), during the growing season...
