Dr Melina Miles, Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) says large numbers of Rutherglen bugs have migrated into cropping regions since early November... "While the exact origin of the bugs is unknown, it is likely they are being carried on storm fronts from inland regions where they have bred up over winter and spring on native host plants," Dr Miles said... Dr Miles says ploughing a deep furrow between the seedling crop and the source of bugs, or a border spray may be sufficient to prevent ongoing infestation...

Sunflowers are attacked by a number of insect pests at various stages of crop development... Damage both adults and larvae attack sunflower larvae feed on decaying vegetable and crop residues in the soil they also feed on newly germinating seed and the growing points of seedlings which results in patchy stands damage is most common in early-planted crops where crop residue has become scarce during summer, adults may damage young plants by surface feeding or cutting of the plant at or near soil level damage by both larvae and adults may necessitate replanting... If crops require spraying , best results are achieved before heads turn down to the ground...

Decision making in a dry finish.. Growers will likely get the best outcome from harvesting the crop even if it's going to give a low yield," he said... Growers considering spraying out or cutting paddocks for hay need to consider the history of the crop, including how much rainfall it received early in the season and the extent of any early frost damage, along with weather forecasts in deciding what path to take...

Growers considering spraying out or cutting paddocks for hay need to consider the history of the crop, including how much rainfall it received early in the season and the extent of any early frost damage, along with weather forecasts in deciding what path to take... Both Mr Wooding and Dr Wilhelm agree that unless the plants are dying or dead there is still time for the crops to recover, and a rain in the coming weeks will significantly improve the potential grain yield for many growers...

Seed dressings to combat soil insects are now commonly available and may be the most effective control as well as the least disruptive to natural enemies... Natural enemies of helicoverpa include predators of eggs, larvae and pupae, parasites of eggs and larvae and caterpillar diseases... Control may be more difficult in high-yielding thick canopy crops, particularly when larvae are resting under leaf litter at the base of plants...
