Leader of the Southern Pulse Agronomy project Dr Jason Brand says growers need to get the fundamentals for their faba beans right up front, such as row spacing, plant density and pest and disease management, to avoid any issues in the canopy later in the season... Growers wanting to avoid issues with canopy management in faba bean crops later this season should first get fundamental measures such as row spacing, plant density, inoculation and pest and disease management right earlier in the season... Dr Brand has been looking at novel ways of reducing the problem in the HRZ, including chemical and mechanical treatments, but says the key message for growers was still to focus on getting the important things right early in the growing season...

" Date: 24.06.2008 blackspot mangager Identifies a low risk sowing date for field peas.. Blackspot Manager' calculates the timing of this spore release using seasonal rainfall and temperature data, and identifies whether the delay in sowing is necessary in the current season or whether it is safe for peas to be sown during the autumn... { A time of sowing trial at Kingsford was assessed for blackspot and the peas sown on 14 June had an extremely low infection, validating the prediction made by 'Blackspot Manager'...

Growers have moved in and out of raised beds as the seasons have varied... SFS CEO Jon Midwood, who leads 10 full-time staff in the 18-year-old organisation, suggests one solution to achieving consistently high yields from 500 to 1000 millimetres of rainfall in a varying climate could be "making the bucket bigger"... The bigger bucket would work by buffering the moisture available to the crop, rather than swinging from dry to overflowing or waterlogged, particularly in the more sodic subsoils in the winter...

GRDC Western Panel chair Peter Roberts says the new project, starting in July 2016, is focused on forest gravel soils as they are the dominant soil type across about three million hectares of Western Australia's high-rainfall cropping zone... "Gravel contained in the soil can adversely affect the soils' water-holding capacity, acidity, organic matter, root growth, nutrient supply, and the effectiveness of fertiliser and herbicide applications... The project is part of the GRDC's new External Investment Plan 2016-17, which is also exploring crop heat tolerance, weeds, slugs and snails, legumes in low and medium-rainfall zones, education resources, biosecurity, karnal bunt fungal disease, and soil water and nutrients...

Subsoil manuring comes of age in HRZ.. "What we end up getting after subsoil manuring is a larger bucket size and soil capable of holding three times its original capacity of plant-available water, which can be stored deep in the profile to be used in the spring grain-fill period achieving much higher water use efficiency.".. While results are still inconclusive as to which manure or organic matter might be best to use, Dr Peries says they do need to find a material that is more abundantly available should the popularity of subsoil manuring increase...
