Mullewa grower Andrew Messina is trialling a new deep-ripper that can slice 80 centimetres into the soil to crack hard pans and help overcome compaction issues... Andrew says in 12m-wide and 200m-long paddock strip trials on an area that had been mouldboard ploughed in 2011, the deep-rippers produced wheat yields of 2.7 tonnes per hectare, compared with 2t/ha from the nil-treated area and 2.3 to 2.4t/ha from a conventional deep plough (tilling to a depth of 30cm)... Andrew says the main drawback of ripping to depths below 30cm is having to use a much smaller machine - the Heliripper is about 6m wide, travels at a speed of 7 to 8 kilometres per hour and treats about 5ha/hour...

Wet conditions can cause headaches for growers at harvest time, but a silver lining may be the opportunity to use deep cultivation to alleviate compacted sands... Research has also shown that the use of CTF techniques on deep-ripped soils can save fuel and deliver crop yields about 10 per cent higher compared with those from cultivated areas where CTF is not used... Dr Blackwell said some growers were finding they could conserve fuel and reduce soil clod size by using deep rippers with 'shallow leading tynes' at the front of the machine and deeper tynes at the back, when they needed to rip to 500 millimetres...

Mitigation (annual management) of non-wetting soils by no-till furrow sowing can often be improved by: adding wings to points or boots sowing close to the previous row using banded wetter, especially with knife points using better wetter formulations on dry soil.. The researchers say this would provide greater annual whole-farm profit, assuming the whole farm is moderately water repellent and dry sowing is commonly used... "For growers on moderately repellent yellow sand at East Binnu, a lot of money could be spent on claying or blanket application of a wetting agent; the trial showed this would likely result in wasted money, unless the more effective methods of claying with deeper incorporation were used," he says...
