oil production

Delaying top-up nitrogen (N) applications until canola crops are flowering is unlikely to incur big yield or oil production penalties in lower-rainfall parts of the Western Australian grainbelt... Mr Seymour says at the majority of sites across the two years, delaying N application until eight or 12 weeks after sowing (near to flowering) or splitting applications produced similar yield results to earlier times of N application... Mr Seymour says splitting applications to 25kg N/ha at sowing and 25kg N/ha eight or 12 weeks later had a better effect on oil and yield than applying a single dose of 50kg N/ha near flowering...

Farm business grows on novel mix of options.. The plan was to cold-press canola to produce oil for use in animal feeds and biodiesel, with canola meal also sold for animal feed... Rob says there is nothing new in the technology to cold-press oilseeds, but it is the only operation of its kind in Tasmania...

The Australian research has effectively succeeded in extending canola's existing short form of omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA) into the LC varieties - eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) - that are normally sourced, via fish, from marine plants... Dr Malcolm Devine at Nuseed says the project's ultimate goal is to make Australia the first and foremost global supplier of DHA-containing canola oil creating valuable new markets for Australian growers... Overall, Dr Osmond and Dr Devine say that the potential for commercialisation is strong and the science developed by CSIRO is robust and thorough...
