Recent trials have shown that spring sowing of winter canola can provide increased returns compared to a summer fallow... Spring-sown winter canola at Dunkeld pictured just before grazing in summer 2011 (left) and at flowering in spring 2012 (right).. For a winter variety, this means plants can be sown in spring, grazed during summer and then grow and recover in the lead-up to winter...

Southern Farming Systems projects coordinator Annieka Paridaen at a trial of Hyola 971 CL that was sown on 14 November 2012 and grazed in summer and autumn 2013... Winter canola has been successfully sown in spring, grazed over summer and harvested for grain in 2012 and 2013.. With the release of new varieties such as CB@" Taurus and Hyola 971 CL, an opportunity now exists to sow canola in spring and graze the crop in summer and autumn with little impact on subsequent grain yield...

Previous work in eastern Australia and WA has demonstrated that autumn sown (March/April) cereals can be grazed once they are anchored (@3 leaf) until the commencement of stem elongation (Z30) without affecting grain yield... At a workshop in Esperance in 2011 it was suggested we test the grazing of spring type cereals from mid April sowing... Before extrapolating the results to other regions in WA we believe we need to assess the recovery of cereals and canola to a wider range of environments, in particular low and medium rainfall zones where recovery may not be as robust...
