In summary, 20 trials have now recently been undertaken across a number of seasons and locations in NSW. None of them have demonstrated S responses in yield or oil %. This does not exclude deficiency and yield penalties from occurring but does highlight that the frequency and the likelihood is not high... Delaying any action that has the potential to cease grain fill will see more seeds achieve their maximum size and improve yield... In summary there was no 'concerning' level of seed loss observed at any trial or timing, correlating well with the yield data...

For many the summer cropping rotation will include sorghum and maximising crop yield and profitability will be a key driver of all pre-plant and in-crop agronomic decisions... The research took in data from 12 sites across the northern region during 2012-2013 to determine the agronomic and economic responses of grain sorghum to varying levels of N nutrition... Sites where starting soil N was less than 70kg N/hectare were all responsive to N application...

Water-use efficiency (WUE) in high rainfall zone (HRZ) for agricultural production can be extremely variable, as a result of environmental and agronomic constraints to grain production that limit yield potential... The project will seek to quantify the WUE of current and emerging practices, use targeted field trials and APSIM modeling to explore ways to raise WUE by 10% through management changes and extend these practices to farmers and extension agents... For irrigation, two strategic applications of water improve WUE of barley compared with a single event and a better option is to invest in soil moisture monitoring equipment, which will permit deficit-based irrigation that has shown to improve grain yield and WUE across seasons in x years...

Similar results were achieved with barley with yield responses to PGRs in two out of three years and a reduction in crop height recorded.. S requirements should be locally assessed on a paddock to paddock basis; consider fertiliser history, cropping rotation, product removal and soil test data... Overall, N was the key nutrient driving early growth responses at all sites (Table 3) in 2012, and the N balance was more important than S. Similar yields were achieved from applying N as Urea alone, as SoA, or as a Urea and gypsum combination (Figure 1) at all sites, except at Lameroo where an additional response to combined N and S was found... The response is not uncommon in Mallee farming systems, as DAP/MAP will supply a proportion of the N requirement, and the ongoing crop demand for N can be assessed throughout the growing season to better match seasonal conditions (soil moisture) with N supply...
