The key period for protecting wheat against Septoria tritici blotch is from the start of stem elongation to the booting phase as the ear starts to emerge... Grain growers should be concentrating their first fungicide spray for Septoria tritici blotch (STB) at GS31 rather than waiting for the flag leaf to emerge before trying to get on top of the disease... Mr Poole says mutations similar to those that have made STB less sensitive (more resistant) to triazole fungicides in Europe have now been detected in Australia through work conducted by Dr Andrew Milgate, from the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries...

HRZ growers urged to be prepared for STB threat.. Mr Poole says rusts are a "puppy" compared to STB because fungicides do not achieve the same level of control as seen with stripe rust in Australia, and because the disease has a longer latent period which makes it more difficult to determine its progress... With the STB pathogen becoming resistant to strobilurins and triazoles in other parts of world and with evidence that the pathogen in southern Australia has some of the early stage resistance mutations to triazoles, Mr Poole is urging growers to use an IDM strategy and not base control on fungicides alone...

Mr Poole pointed out that an advantage of foliar fungicides over upfront treatments were that if dry conditions do not favour disease, or Adult Plant Resistance (APR) offers sufficient protection, then foliar fungicides may be unnecessary, resulting in significant cost savings... Upfront treatments are less likely to provide protection for this later developing rust and foliar applications targeted at stripe and leaf rust control at stem elongation (GS32-39) while reducing infection lower down in the canopy still leave the peduncle (upper stem) and head without fungicide protection... Septoria tritici blotch is a stubble-borne disease that is most likely to affect early-sown cereals and cereals sown into wheat stubble... Septoria tritici blotch (STB) has spread beyond the confines of the southern high-rainfall zone (HRZ) and into more medium-rainfall environments in South Australia, prompting warnings for growers across the state to be vigilant in monitoring and, if required, treating the disease this year... The severity and frequency of mutations in the Septoria pathogen population that confer fungicide, resistance may not be serious enough to affect the field performance of fungicides but problems will increase if growers are too dependent on chemicals to control the disease, Mr Poole says...
