Funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) on behalf of growers and the Australian Government, the research project involves a survey of farmers and advisers to identify the major insect pests of grain crops and to better understand the tools and strategies used to manage these pests... PestFacts SA and Western Victoria co-ordinator Kym Perry (SARDI Entomology) said the results of the survey would help researchers and the broader industry to understand what Australian growers do to manage insect pests in their grain crops, and their attitudes towards pest management... Growers and advisers seeking more information about the survey can email helen.spafford@uwa.edu.au or laura.fagan@uwa.edu.au...

The outputs of this and previous projects confirm the ability of CQ grain growers to produce more grain from less water using an opportunity cropping strategy during a decade of low rainfall years (2000-2009) and still maintain a profitable industry... This group of activities showed that the technologies assessed in the project were not 'grower friendly', and that they needed a high level of expertise for successful use and adoption... Cropping frequency An assessment of cropping sequences over 10 years on the Moonggoo and Kilmore case study farms examined the potential for increasing the cropping frequency in CQ as a means of improving the profitability of grain production...

" Facilitating increased on-farm adoption of broadleaf species in crop sequences to improve grain production and profitability.. The area sown to pulse legume crops or canola has dramatically declined in the past 8-10 years, and despite 65-70% of southern grain region still growing pastures in rotation with crops, many of these pastures tend to have low legume contents and provide little nitrogen benefit to following crops... There are many good reasons why growers have reduced the frequency of use of broadleaf species in recent years related to late starts to the growing season, drought and risk aversion...

Blackleg and its management has become an important issue for canola in the coming seasons... As most of the canola cultivars, irrespective of the level of their adult plant resistance, are susceptible to infection by the fungus at the seedling stage (may be termed as 'seedling susceptibility window') and consequent canker formation the timing of ascospore release in relation to the onset of adult plant resistance provides information on the risk of blackleg... The risk of blackleg appears to be both location and season specific...

The project will do more than provide a general awareness of climate change and its implications for agriculture... High-profile on-ground activities in Queensland and NSW will address each of the Climate Change Research Program (CCRP) priorities: managing emissions, better soil management, and adapting to a changing climate... The activities will help farmers and advisers to understand the implications for management on their own farms and start developing their own adaptation strategies...
