Queensland grower Wade Bidstrup has been using a GPS approach to paddock renovation and applying manure across his cropping area to lift grains productivity on his family's property in the Warra district on the western Darling Downs... Over the past 18 months, the Bidstrups - Wade, his wife Sally, his parents Jeff and Marilyn, his brother Brett and sister-in-law Rebecca - have been using GPS to laser-level the cropping areas on their property at Warra, 45 kilometres north-west of Dalby... While the method cost a fraction of the $120/ha cost of cutting and filling their paddocks with GPS, Wade says it failed to remove all the depressions and ridges in the soil that caused waterlogging losses...

Understanding the strategies required to fight stripe rust is now a year-round job for everyone in the industry, reports Helen Olsen.. Mr Matt Williams retrieving stored rust samples from the rust pathogen collection at the Plant Breeding Institute at Cobbitty, NSW. Rust spores are stored in "suspended animation" in liquid nitrogen at -196C so they can be retrieved when needed for ongoing research... Dr Hollaway recommends fungicide spraying before the level of rust has increased to one percent (40 leaves infected in every 100 plants) to stop the exponential growth of the rust: "The message from overseas has been to treat plants with fungicide at certain plant growth stages, but really the application of fungicide needs to coincide with the development of the rust infection."..
