Discovery of new leaf rust pathotypes in Western Australia during 2013 has prompted a warning about careful cereal rust management in 2014... Detection of new leaf rust pathotypes in 2013 that can overcome resistance in wheat and barley cultivars has highlighted the importance of implementing up-to-date cereal rust management plans this year... Growers are advised to check updated disease resistance ratings in the 2014 GRDC and Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA), wheat and barley variety guides, and choose varieties carefully to minimise the risk of crop damage...

Of the three rust diseases affecting wheat crops, leaf rust is often overlooked because it is thought to be less damaging than stem rust and stripe rust... The new pathotype found in WA last year has a DNA fingerprint identical to isolates of the '76 group' from eastern Australia, clearly showing it has spread from east to west in Australia... Some wheat varieties, such as King Rock , Fortune and Zippy , have additional leaf rust resistance that is expected to remain effective, meaning a lesser shift in their resistance ratings from moderately resistant (MR) to MS. LongReach Cobra , Mace and Carnamah varieties have shown varying responses to the new pathotype, so further tests are underway to more accurately determine how they might react...

SARDI Cereal Pathologist Dr Hugh Wallwork has received reports of stripe rust and leaf rust in wheat, and net form net blotch and spot form net blotch in barley... While similar, the symptoms of stripe rust will appear in a line (top), whereas leaf rust appears as single pustules or more random groups of pustules (bottom)... The complication is that while Mace is not as susceptible to leaf rust, the disease has been seen in Mace, so it's not just a matter of any rust on Mace wheat being stripe rust."..

Now available are Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Tips and Tactics publications for wheat leaf rust, stem rust and stripe rust, which have the potential to slash farm incomes during an outbreak... GRDC General Manager Crop Protection Ken Young said careful monitoring of crops was crucial and identification of rust infections in the previous year could help determine the threat of rust and other diseases in the following season... The Tips and Tactics publications, available at this link , include information about conditions that favour the diseases; disease identification; management strategies; frequently asked questions; submitting a suspected rust sample; and links to further information...

Management of the cereal fungal disease Septoria will be the focus of a Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) technical workshop in Naracoorte next month... Septoria has become more problematic in recent seasons in the high rainfall zone because of the increased intensity of wheat cultivation, wetter and cooler springs, the cultivation of susceptible varieties and a shift to earlier sowings...
