White grain disorder (WGD) was first recorded in Australia in 1999 in Queensland and since that time has been identified in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia... The symptoms associated with WGD in wheat in Australia are similar in some respects to those produced by Fusarium head blight (FHB)... It is also expected that grain marketers and importing countries could downgrade or not buy infected grain due to this similarity in the visual symptoms produce by FHB and WGD...

Low protein in cereal grains is indicative of poor nitrogen supply to the grain during the grain fill period... Figure 6: Relative wheat varietal nitrogen uptake performance assessed by grain nitrogen content (kg/ha) - Qld and NW NSW NVT Trials - 2011.. Soil test data from autumn 2012 suggests that many paddocks had no benefit from normal 20 - 50 kg/ha summer fallow N mineralisation due to losses from waterlogging or the >20 kg/ha residual mineral N present in the post-harvest ( Figure 2)...

Impact of crown rot on yield and quality is a balancing act between inoculum levels and soil water.. Table 1: Pratylenchus thornei tolerance, crown rot resistance ratings and yield of 10 bread wheat and 1 durum variety evaluated at Gurley in 2012... It is evident that varieties which have good levels of tolerance to Pt combined with some level of resistance to crown rot (even MS) had a significant improvement in yield in the presence of both of these diseases...

Paul Telfer: The most adverse effects of heat stress on yield have been found to occur during flowering rather than grain fill... The wheat plant is most sensitive to heat stress during flowering and grain filling, and 'heat-stress events' often coincide with drought stress and frost events... In the short term, the data collected has highlighted that current best practice in terms of sowing time and appropriately matching it to crop maturity are the best ways to minimise the effects of heat stress on crop production...

Harvest efficiency helps win grain quality race.. This year Mark started the cropping program early on 7 April, after 140mm of rain... As 15 per cent moisture is higher than the Grain Trade Australia delivery standard for crops, Mark stores the grain in aeration cooling silos until it can be blended with drier grain to meet market specifications...
