Influences on costs and profit Profit is driven by income and costs the impact on income should be considered when changing costs. '.. SAF is totally reliant on all operations to be undertaken by the contractors mutual obligation to each party is very strong - my preferred terminology of a `partnership`... I have always provided a worksheet to staff listing not only the salary, but also the other cash components of the package such as superannuation, housing, power and phones...

An increase in land area can lead to improvements in profit but it requires significant capital investment which can increase risk... The results, shown in Figure 1, demonstrate that for grazing farms there is a trend beyond $4 million dollars in asset value for farm profitability to decline as asset value increases... Consider the same manager with the same business now looks at his existing system and realizes that there are opportunities for improving profitability on the existing area...

Machinery efficiency showcased in CQ.. Tour organiser Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) principal technical officer Maurice Conway said the tour primarily attracted young growers keen to employ new technologies to generate time and labour savings and maximise crop production opportunities... The disc system is now incorporating on-the-go unit downforce monitoring and adjustment, section control to shut off rows to reduce overlap, variable rate planting and fertilizer application with maps overlaid from historical yield data, soil type and observation," he said...

New survey-based research indicates that adoption of controlled traffic farming (CTF) in Australian grain operations is limited by low understanding of its basic principles and how they work as part of an integrated system... Of the 222 grain growers surveyed in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, just 33 were matching the widths of their machinery to three-metre permanent wheel tracks for all their operations with harvesters, tractors, sprayers and spreaders... "About 34 per cent of growers reported that they used permanent wheel tracks, but many of these were not matching the widths of all their machinery because they used 2m wheel tracks, in addition to 3m wheel tracks...

Pittsworth grower Peter Bach has implemented a new approach to nutrient management this season that aims to reduce labour costs and improve machinery efficiency on his family's 1214-hectare property in south-east Queensland... Instead of applying fertiliser on fallow country before sowing summer crops, Peter has opted to delay this operation, and instead plans to increase his fertiliser rates at the time of sowing 566ha of sorghum and 242ha of maize... While Peter is now applying a total of 330kg/ha of fertiliser at planting, he hopes that placing the fertiliser rows 38 centimetres from the plant rows will reduce the potential for fertiliser toxicity resulting from the higher fertiliser rate...
