Aeration trials reduce insects and deliver savings.. Trials hosted by the Mingenew Irwin Group (MIG) have demonstrated that aeration can reduce insect burdens by an average of 60 per cent in stored seed grain, and deliver cost savings of about $2 per tonne... The total calculated cost of storing grain in an aerated silo was $11.56/t, compared with costs estimated at $13.50/t for storing grain in non-aerated silos - including the cost of storage and fumigations to control insects, as well as seed losses, based on a seed cost of $300/t...

John piper and his family use a 60-tonne Kotzur drying silo to enable them to harvest over-moisture grain and dry it to end-user specifications... When showers of rain started in March - which went on to total 134 millimetres for the month - the Pipers' elected to harvest what was left of their sorghum at 15 per_cent moisture and hold it under aeration cooling until the grain could be blended or dried... For the 2010-11 winter harvest, John says having the capacity to hold a portion of their wheat under aeration cooling for sale at a later date was beneficial as some wheat and barley crops within the district were penalised heavily due to the suspected presence of fusarium head blight and white grain disorder.
