Until such varieties are released, northern growers and advisers need to select varieties firstly on the basis of crown rot risk and then manage for stripe rust ... There is a risk of WSMV being spread through infected seed into new areas... We have not been able to determine an economic threshold for RGB in sorghum from these trials...

As an example, where appropriate use of fertilisers can increase productivity beyond that currently being attained, adjusting the amount or timing of fertiliser application would result in greater carbon inputs to the soil... Recent research results have also noted that the proportion of residue carbon that is retained in a soil to enhance soil carbon stocks can be enhanced by ensuring that enough nutrients exist in the soil to both satisfy the crop requirements and the requirements to build soil organic carbon... If we use the same bulk density as above (1.2 g/cm3) and restrict our calculations to the top 10 cm of soil where organic carbon is most easily increased, at 2% carbon the soil would contain 24 tonnes C/ha...

In recent years, researchers have taken a closer look at the fundamentals of soil/tool interactions to shed light on the soil force system acting on disc seeder blades and how soil movement is induced by no-till furrow openers... Using UniSA's indoor seed-placement test rig, Dr Solhjou attached tillage tools to a frame that moves over bins of soil at desired depth and speed... When the furrow opener moved through the bin, these tracers were thrown with the soil and later located using a 3-D digitising frame to quantify soil movement, layer by layer...

Southern Farming Systems project coordinator Lisa Miller says that growers need to sample below 10 centimetres to better understand soil acidity... Rather than running with a set program, such as the traditional approach that involves applying lime at 2.5 tonnes per hectare every 10 years for Victorian soils, growers are advised to test soil pH every three years so lime can be applied early and rates adjusted if needed; for instance, when either the topsoil or the subsoil are close to the minimum pH target... Over the next three years, the project aims to provide more information on crop responses to lime applications, including assessing whether there are benefits from small and frequent additional lime applications and identifying any negative consequences of applying lime at rates that are too high...

Nematodes reduce the amount of water available for plant growth.. Maintaining a low nematode population improves crop yields.. The final yields from three separate experiments highlighted the differences in each cultivar's tolerance to nematodes, with the yields from each cultivar generally corresponding to the cultivars tolerance rating, EGA Wylie (MT) e QT8447 (T-MT) >EGA Gregory (MT) > Kennedy (MI) > Strzelecki (I-VI) ...
