Technologies developed for the reliable phenotyping of lines and screening of segregating populations for adult plant resistance to leaf, stem and stripe rust in wheat, and leaf rust in barley, using plants grown under controlled environment conditions (temperature and light), will facilitate the more rapid development of new wheat and barley varieties... The new QTL are not linked with unfavourable QTL for malt quality (as was the case with previously documented major QTL conferring grain dormancy in barley) nor with intolerance to heat (as was the case with the mlo source of resistance to powdery mildew)... Novel QTL identified in barley need to be evaluated in populations with higher levels of recombination to validate QTL effects in different backgrounds, and to identify markers more closely linked to these QTL...

The aim of the project was to clone the scald resistance gene Rrs1 from barley and identify more resistant barley germplasm that is not used by barley breeders...
