Although we presume there are no insects in grain when being loaded into storage, we generally treat the grain using protectants, or fumigate in gas-tight sealed storage... Fumigating the grain kills any insects present and the aeration maintains grain quality... Always use a mixture of an organophosphate (for example, Fenitrithion , Actellic or Reldan ) with Methoprene (for example, IGR and Diacon ,) either by mixing them together or bought as a 'twin pack' such as Reldan Plus , to protect grain during storage...

Recent ecology research findings which involved trapping flying storage pests across grain growing regions reinforced the value of cleaning up grain residues in storages & equipment.. Examples include: the ability to have fans automatically step through the 3 important stages of aeration cooling - "continuous", "purge", "protected"; an additional auto function that now excludes high humidity air (>85% RH) in all three of these stages; a setting that can be included that adjusts fan operations to cater for fans fitted to silos with air flow rates higher then the standard 2 - 3 L/s/t flow rates... Field tests on farm storages have shown some fans are not delivering required air flow rates...

To control pests at all life stages and prevent resistance, phosphine gas concentration needs to reach 300 parts per million (ppm) for seven days (when grain is above 25C) or 200ppm for 10 days (between 15-25C)... The withholding period is two days after ventilation the total fumigation process requires seven to 10 days...

Correct use of fumigant in stored grain urged Australian growers in the fortunate position of having grain to store this year are being provided with timely support to ensure they protect their yields and safeguard their enterprises through the correct use of phosphine for controlling pests in stored grain... GRDC Manager of Extension and Grower Programs, Tom McCue, says phosphine remains the single-most relied upon fumigant to control stored grain pests in Australian grain production systems, but continued incorrect use is resulting in poor insect control and developing resistance in key pest species... To support growers in the effective application of phosphine, the GRDC has produced a valuable booklet, Fumigating with Phosphine, Other Fumigants and Controlled Atmospheres...
