Peter Sadler says the best features of the Harrington Seed Destructor (HSD) include: the ability to mechanically deal with ryegrass; the capacity to retain organic matter and keep nutrients rather than burn and destroy them; and being able to complete other jobs instead of windrow burning... "Chaff carts are OK, but you're burning nutrient, so when this HSD came up and we did some research, we decided to buy it," Peter says... "The previous model was belt driven and we believe they were a bit of a pain."..

Subsoil phosphorus deficiencies identified in long-term research across the northern grain-growing region have spurred a new approach to fertiliser application for the Black family at Brookstead in south-east Queensland... The Blacks - brothers Laurie and Jim, along with Jim's son Peter - have invested in an Orthman (1tRIPr) strip tillage machine designed to cultivate the seedbed and place fertiliser down to a depth of 20 centimetres in the soil... The aim is to address phosphorus deficiency in the subsoil, as opposed to the topsoil, which research has revealed is limiting yields by between 10 and 20 per cent on their 1618-hectare cotton and grain property...

Peter Unger and his family will expand their legume plantings this year as a tactic designed specifically to lift wheat yields... Due to his 2014 experience, Peter is planning to increase the area sown to lupins to pump in more nitrogen and increase organic matter, especially in paddocks that have been direct-drilled for 15 years without a legume... "Two of the three paddocks we sowed to lupins last year performed well, but I think Sclerotinia may have taken hold in the third paddock, which looked the best but performed the worst."..
