Three sets of plant samples of the same variety, showing Charcoal Rot (reddish-purple-black stems), Water Stress (pale, white stems) and Full Water (healthy green stems)... Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported research suggests that black layer (abscission layer) formation in the field is the best tool to safely schedule spray-out timing as it can help growers determine their risk approach and modify it as needed on a paddock and variety basis... When spraying, Mr McIntosh said growers needed to ensure that application was carried out in the prime time of day, usually early morning when stomates are open; ensure water quality was good, water volume adequate and adhere to seven days withholding period...

Rots in maize can be caused by a wide range of fungal pathogens... Like the stalk rot phase, it is more common in wetter, cooler growing regions... Polysora rust is favoured by warm wet weather and is a disease of tropical regions...

To date, almost 570 Fusarium isolates have been collected at 92 sites from sorghum stalks, seedlings, panicles (heads) and stubble of commercial crops, with just over 500 isolates identified to species... There were no significant differences in yield between treatments in any of the three trials, indicating that fusarium stalk rot did not cause yield loss in the absence of lodging after the "soft" finishes experienced in the trials... The use of desiccant herbicide to aid in harvesting should be carefully evaluated in paddocks where sorghum stalk-rotting pathogens have been found in the past...

Fusarium stalk rot - red internal discoloration of sorghum stalks infected by Fusarium species.. The risk of sorghum stalk rot developing in these crops is likely to be higher in 2011 crops than in other years... Plants may or may not display symptoms of fusarium stalk rot inside the stem at the time of a pre-harvest glyphosate spray, so it is difficult to determine the potential risk of lodging in these situations...
