* Bannister oats are subject to Plant Breeders Rights Caption: GRDC's Kwinana West Port Zone Regional Cropping Solutions Network (RCSN) group funded trials into fungicide management of septoria leaf blotch on Bannister oats last year, carried out by ConsultAg's Ashton Gray and Garren Knell... Using fungicides to control septoria leaf blotch in Bannister oats may improve crop yields when good spring rain is received, but can't be relied on to reduce grain staining at the end of the season... Ashton says, given the trials were deliberately carried out where disease pressure was high, it appears that using a double-spray can be economic in high yield-potential crops in a year with a wet finish and when infection occurs at/after stem extension...

The crop was assessed for Yr infection at a number of stages throughout the trial... ANOVA was used to assess the impact upon yield as a result of the various treatments and the LSD was used to separate the means... In considering scenarios 1 & 2 where no fungicide is applied, so Yr was not controlled pre grazing, the grazing sees an increase in yield of 0.54 t/ha which is significantly different...

The use of fungicides on specific canola varieties requires all the key factors to be considered; varieties genetic resistance, rainfall intensity and timing, sowing date, rotations, stubble load, types of cultivation, time of sporulation events, isolation distances, previous variety histories, specifically blackleg groups... At individual trial sites, some varieties showed yield increases of up to 500kg/ha and gross returns up to $300/ha with different fungicide combinations... It is important to recognise that individual trial results showed some significant yield responses from different fungicide combinations or treatments on some varieties due to the interaction of three main factors; varieties genetic resistance, amount and timing of rainfall and sporulation events and the history of varietal cultivation in and around trial area leading to higher amounts of different pathogenic isolates at each location...

Thanks must go to everyone who has submitted papers and presented at the 2004 Agribusiness Crop Updates... There was little graminaceous plant material available on which aphids could survive, so none were recorded in the wheat blocks at either site until the end of August, by which time most plants had reached GS 41-47 (booting)... In order to provide faster data transmission between the web server and the user, graphical presentations (e.g. bar charts) are presented to the user if and only if the user requests...

1. Stripe rust: 1.1 Delay the epidemic: destroy the green bridge at least 2 weeks before sowing winter wheat... There is a need for an improved understanding of the value of various levels of resistance to stripe rust in commercial wheat varieties in the northern region... At HRS, where the stripe rust infection was early, H45, which is very susceptible to this disease had high yields when the fungicide intervention was early (T1) but substantially lower yields when the fungicide applied late (T2) and lower again there was no fungicide applied (see figure 5)...

P4/S9 and P2/S4 were the two most profitable sequences and, overall, the 'maximum profit - P4' philosophy had the highest mean gross margin... It is logical that those growers that have chosen to have no livestock will have no interest in trialling grazing crops... Overall, the data has indicated that for the biserrula inoculant all of the carrier's have difficulties in carrying enough live rhizobia numbers to adequately nodulate the legume hosts after 3-4 months of dry, hot soil...

Disease data was assessed at each application timing and finally ~3-4 weeks after the T3 application... Figure 2 shows the performance of the range of fungicide treatments when applied at T2 (GS32-33) on disease levels assessed at GS75-83 (milk to soft dough)... The very early T1 application (~GS15) provided useful initial disease suppression but had negligible impact on the final disease levels assessed at the late milk to early dough stages...
