The comparisons represent the general farming system and evolution in management over the last 30 years of many progressive grain growing farms in low-rainfall regions of Australia... The largest increase to yield and water-use efficiency was achieved by improved summer weed management (Scenario 3)... A wheat variety with a long coleoptile gives a large yield increase in combination with the other management improvements (Scenario 6)...

Dual-purpose crops delivering better pastures can-wheat plot graze.. The successful implementation of dual-purpose cereals into mixed farming operations is delivering benefits to agribusinesses beyond just the bottom line... Researchers are now quantifying the indirect benefits delivered to pastures of shifting stock onto early-season canola or wheat crops, as well as the implications for weed and disease controls, management flexibility and business risk minimisation...

Every season grazing crops have provided a benefit to the whole farm bottom line, from the wetter years of the eighties and nineties when grazing wheat was the outstanding enterprise, through the dry years from 2002 to 2009, where grazing crops provided a crucial "fall back" position for winter dry matter production; reducing and often avoiding the otherwise required supplementary feeding... Again in 2010 with a return to more favorable conditions, grazing cereals and grazing canola performed extremely well, providing benefits right across the farm with a resulting increase in whole farm profitability... The trial was set up so that sheep grazing days could be measured across a range of grazing scenarios, which were compared to set stocking the same area of a good phalaris and sub clover pasture...

N2O emissions from the soil are a by-product of the process of nitrification, and one of the end-products of the process of denitrification... In the cases of wheat and sorghum sowing in 2010, rainfall immediately after sowing led to significant rates of N2O loss from the applied fertiliser N. For example, in the 5 days after sowing wheat (with fertiliser applied), 139 g of N2O-N/ha was emitted from the soil... These losses of N2O from cropping soils are significant, with the N2O emitted directly from the soil accounting for about 45% of the total greenhouse gas emissions coming from the entire operation of growing, fertilising, spraying and harvesting a wheat crop...

Subsoil manuring drives up HRZ profits.. Pros: crop yields are increased; rainfall capture and use can be improved; effects are long-lasting - four years or sometimes more; and savings can be made on nitrogen fertiliser... Yield increases in the trial ranged from 2 to 5t/ha in wheat and 1 to 2t/ha in canola, at the full manure application rate and where a successful crop was established (see Table 1 )...

Gross margins achieved on-farm for wheat in 2011 may have been lower than shown in Table 2... The gross margin calculations depicted in Figure 5 assumed that canola yielded 50 % of wheat at that site in that year...
