Foliar fungicide applications at or prior to first node stage (Z31) can be effective at controlling leaf spot diseases in susceptible wheat varieties under high disease pressure... Necrotic leaf area was determined on top 3 to 4 leaves (on 15 tillers /plot) from all plots at Z15, Z25, Z31, Z39, Z55 (i.e. before each foliar fungicide spray) and Z72, or in the case of opportunistic trials assessed at regular intervals after trial establishment... The in-furrow fungicides tested show promise for leaf spot disease control and in the future they may become an alternative to foliar applications, for the control of early season leaf spot infections...

Overall, barley diseases have the potential to cause very significant costs for farmers... Incidence is 30 per_cent frequency in 30 per_cent of the area, so that the average incidence of the disease affecting the crop is 9 per_cent... Overall, breeding contributes more than 25 per cent of the control for 14 diseases, cultural methods for 32 diseases, and pesticides for six barley diseases...

Implications of SFNB infection on barley production in Victoria is not understood as no studies into the epidemiology or control of the disease have been documented since its first detection in the early 1990s... The aim of the study was to establish the importance of SFNB to Victorian barley production and identify control strategies for its management... The study has shown that barley varieties with even partial resistance (seedling resistance) can provide control of SFNB...

DAFWA researcher Ravjit Khangura standing in a field of canola... Dr Khangura said the main control tactic was to reduce the frequency of host species, such as canola and lupins, and it was recommended growers avoid planting canola on paddocks with high sclerotinia levels during the past three years... "Previous research in WA's northern cropping region has shown that applying a single fungicide spray is often effective in reducing canola yield losses from sclerotinia when the crop is at the 15 to 30 per cent flowering stage (coinciding with the onset of spore release) and conditions are conducive to disease," she said...

" Date: 09.12.2013 'Perfect storm' sparks sclerotinia outbreak in canola crops.. " , crops have flowered very early this year due to the mild winter temperatures and this has contributed to the levels of disease we observed," said Mr Lindbeck, who is based at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Institute where he leads Grains Research and Development Corporation-funded research on the management of pulse and oilseed diseases in southern NSW... Mr Lindbeck said that in addition to sclerotinia being an airborne disease, the sclerotinia stem rot pathogen produced hard, black, survival bodies on infected plant tissue called sclerotia which enabled the fungus to survive for up to 10 years in the field...

Plan ahead to stop canola stem rot.. Clean or grade any retained canola crop seed from last season that shows signs of sclerotinia - or use new, clean seed... Dr Khangura says use of fungicides will be determined by: disease presence; conditions conducive for disease development (including rainfall and crop biomass levels); maturity of the variety; crop yield potential; and canola prices...
