Foliar fungicide applications at or prior to first node stage (Z31) can be effective at controlling leaf spot diseases in susceptible wheat varieties under high disease pressure... Necrotic leaf area was determined on top 3 to 4 leaves (on 15 tillers /plot) from all plots at Z15, Z25, Z31, Z39, Z55 (i.e. before each foliar fungicide spray) and Z72, or in the case of opportunistic trials assessed at regular intervals after trial establishment... The in-furrow fungicides tested show promise for leaf spot disease control and in the future they may become an alternative to foliar applications, for the control of early season leaf spot infections...

Rusts The cold winter, dry spring and widespread use of fungicides when needed kept foliar pathogens at generally low levels during 2012... With a change of seasonal conditions in 2013 the risk of, and damage from, stripe rust could be much greater so growers are urged to remain vigilant with in-furrow treatments or early fungicide sprays to control this disease... Should growers decide to apply early protection for stripe rust they can choose cheaper seed treatments containing flutriafol or triadimenol or longer acting treatments based on fluquinconazole or fertiliser- applied fungicides...

Epidemics of yellow spot develop when susceptible varieties are sown into infected stubble where frequent and extended periods of wet weather prevail at temperatures between 10 and 30 C. Optimum temperatures are between 15 and 25 C... Given that timing is the most important factor in fungicidal control, the onus is on growers and agronomists to monitor crops closely... In 2010, the disease was observed causing a leaf blight in barley and in durum wheat in the field...
