The grains industry now has fast access to latest crop disease management information with the unveiling of a website for the new Centre for Crop and Disease Management (CCDM)... "And while fungicides can be very effective in offering protection from diseases, they must be used judiciously and as part of a multi-faceted management strategy which should also include c ontrolling the green bridge for cereal rusts, attention to the potential risk of stubble-borne leaf disease when deciding on crop rotations, and avoiding susceptible varieties... "Growers can save themselves a lot of time and money spent on eradication and management by preventing diseases getting into crops in the first place," said Dr Ryley, from the Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF)... If diseases do get into the crop, knowledge about what diseases are around is the best information to be armed with, he said... For example, prevent contaminated soil or plant residues entering the property by: not letting contract headers and other machinery onto their property unless the equipment has been properly cleaned; monitoring visitors to properties - for example, ensuring visitors contact the owner or manager before visiting, not driving vehicles across the property but rather leaving them at the shed and using an on-farm vehicle; and knowing where planting seed has come from and ensuring only seed from a clean crop is used...
