The Australian Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, and the Queensland Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, John McVeigh, confirmed in Toowoomba today that grain growers across Queensland will benefit from three significant new projects, resulting in the employment of 17 new grain researchers and technical officers... The projects will run over five years, with almost $10 million invested by the GRDC and the remainder from CSIRO, the Queensland Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and the NSW Department of Primary Industries... "The largest of the three projects will see the GRDC contributing $4.96 million to fund the appointment of 11 additional grain researchers in Queensland to address both succession and capacity issues that challenge the productivity, profitability and sustainability of the northern grains farming systems...

Western Australian research investigating whether it is economic to reseed a canola crop that has established poorly suggests that in many cases it might not be worthwhile... As part of the 'Tactical break crop agronomy project', funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), Mr Seymour conducted trials last year aimed at determining the point at which reseeding a low density canola crop was worthwhile... The trials assessed sowing canola before or at the break of the season at plant densities of five, 10, 15 and 30 plants per square metre, compared with plots resown at 30 plants/m over the top of five and 10 plants/m and plots sown normally (not resown) at later dates at five to 60 plants/m ...

Trials provide data for pesticide label changes.. The project will maintain the national database of GRDC pesticide research projects and deliver an annual industry priority list for new chemical uses, as well as submitting more applications to the APVMA for approval of new chemical uses... Two packages of data generated by the project were also given to pesticide registrants for applications directly to the APVMA to add uses to product registrations and labels...

Variety trials sow the way to cropping profits.. "Not only did this analysis indicate a large difference in margin, it also showed that in some regions selecting a wheat variety classified Australian Hard (AH) rather than Australian Prime White (APW) was costing growers income," Mr Giles said... "NVT Online is regularly reviewed and improved; in the past 12 months visits to the website have increased by about 28 per cent and page use has increased by 15 per cent compared with the previous year," Mr Giles said...

Mitigation (annual management) of non-wetting soils by no-till furrow sowing can often be improved by: adding wings to points or boots sowing close to the previous row using banded wetter, especially with knife points using better wetter formulations on dry soil.. The researchers say this would provide greater annual whole-farm profit, assuming the whole farm is moderately water repellent and dry sowing is commonly used... "For growers on moderately repellent yellow sand at East Binnu, a lot of money could be spent on claying or blanket application of a wetting agent; the trial showed this would likely result in wasted money, unless the more effective methods of claying with deeper incorporation were used," he says...
