Canola sown at Pindar as part of the GRDC RCSN early sowing trials in 2015... Trials in Western Australia's northern agricultural region have shown that if growers want to take advantage of very early (early April) germination opportunities in this region, they will require a range of variety maturity choices to achieve the best yields... Of the six wheat varieties trialled in 2015, at sites near Pindar and Yuna, the slow-maturing ForrestA variety had the highest yields of 4 to 4.2 tonnes per hectare when sown early on 9 April at Yuna...

Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) yield traits program manager Jorge Mayer said to ensure continued crop productivity gains, crop traits were needed to deal with various environmental stresses at every developmental stage of the crop... Dr Mayer said Managed Environment Facilities (MEFs), established in recent years with GRDC support, were being used to validate water productivity traits and to develop and apply new research methods... "Trait values generated from research at the MEFs will be provided to plant breeders, along with genotyping and phenotyping tools for incorporation of selected traits in to new crop varieties," Dr Mayer said...

CSIRO complex systems team leader Dr Lindsay Bell heads the ground-breaking GRDC-funded Northern Farming Systems project exploring ways to boost whole-farm cropping productivity... The Northern Farming Systems Project involves one core trial site, six regional sites and computer-based modelling... The systems are comparing management strategies that influence: crop intensity (the number of crops sown per year) by altering soil water thresholds for planting crops; crop diversity by increasing the frequency of break crops and/or legume crops in the sequence; nutrient supply by altering crop nutrient budgets and adding organic amendments; and integrated practices such as cover crops and pasture rotations to restore or build soil quality...

NVT makes crop selection easy for growers.. Neale Sutton, of Australian Crop Accreditation System Limited, which manages the NVT program, said the majority of the 2014 trial results had been uploaded to the NVT website www.nvtonline.com.au enabling growers to access all crop specific information including trial data, sowing guides, End Point Royalty and trial locations... "NVT generates independent information for growers about newly-released varieties of winter field crops, relative to current commercial varieties grown in their area," Mr Sutton said...

Caption 1: CSIRO's GRDC-funded early sowing of wheat trial site at Wickepin last year shows a range of plant development rates dependent on time of sowing and use of long, mid or short maturing variety... But the risks can be reduced by using suitable varieties and tools such as modern no-tillage techniques, summer fallow management and more cost-effective insecticides and fungicides to protect against pests and diseases... This year's NVT trial data includes more detail about wheat variety performance across several years in a range of environments...
